Ravished Armenia (film 1919)
This was a silent film adapted from Aurora Mardiganian's written account of the brutalities suffered by the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. It was produced with the purpose of informing Americans of the awful things that had occurred to Armenian people in 1915
Significance
Visual media technologies, such as film, developed simultaneously with the enforcement of international human rights. Ravished Armenia allowed the suffering of Armenia to be seen internationally, and a sense of moral obligation to react is felt by viewers. It was designed to transform the feelings produced in the film into immediate action.
